Request For Expression Of Interest To Conduct A Study on the Establishment Of A Participatory Guarantee Scheme In The Gambia
United Purpose (UP) is a leading International Development and Humanitarian Agency significantly
present in all regions of the Gambia, Senegal, and the Casamance region. The work of UP includes but is
not limited to improving livelihoods, building resilience and capacity of the people we work with and
contributes to peacebuilding and conflict resolution by working with the government, civil society, and
private sector. Under the EU-funded WACOMP project, UP country office in The Gambia is seeking the
services of a consultant to undertake a study on the “Establishment of a Participatory Grantee Scheme
(PGS)” in the country.
One of WACOMPs objective is to promote organic production for ISO compliance and quality assurance
in the onion, tomato, pepper and sweet potato value chains. Since inception, the project has built the
capacity of both women and youths in organic production mainly processing and application of organic
pesticides and compost. In line with project implementation protocols and as a mitigation strategy
envisaged in the WACOMP ESIA report 2022, the project plans to establish a PGS for the sale of organic
pesticides and compost in the domestic market in The Gambia. The PGS will serve as an environmental
hazard mitigation measure and poverty reduction strategy as well as minimize the importation of chemical
pesticides and fertilizer into the country for production purposes, creating job opportunities for youth and
women working in the horticulture sector, improve food security increase household income which will
translate into poverty reduction among participating farmers.
Purpose of Consultancy
The purpose of this consultancy is to determine the current situation of the processing and
application of various organic (both botanical and biological control mechanisms) pesticides,
herbicides and compost manure that are formulated in the country vis Avis imported inorganic
agro-inputs. Identify various organic solutions that can be used to control pests and diseases in
the horticulture sector. Identify a PGS that can be established in the horticulture sector.
Duration and Scope
The study will be conducted within a period of 25 days from signing the contract to final report submission.
The study will be conducted in project implementing regions (NBR, CRRN, CRRS and West Coast Region)
in The Gambia.
